TOP 25 Best album covers 2013

Happy upcoming New Years Eve!

TOP 25 Best album covers 2013 chosen by Bandmill

Here are the 25 holy chosen ones from 2013 (see the rest 119 best album covers from here). It was great to see such diversity throughout the year and like always bands that are still trying to get to the top have the best covers. The only ‘mainstream’ (if you can say this anymore in metal and hard rock genre) bands included to this list are Amorphis, Carcass (with amazing comeback album), Ghost (album of the year?), Michael Monroe and Satyricon. Ok, maybe Serenity and Six Feet Under could go under this category.

So why these not so familiar bands have better covers than many mainstream bands with bigger budgets? From my experience it’s mainly because they still have the hunger and creative vitality in everything what they do. They are more willing to try out different things and are more open for creative solutions. But sometimes this quite blue-eyed and naive thinking can also do really bad damage (see my upcoming and previous posts about funny album covers) but in these cases below everything went smoothly. This is also why I love to work with younger bands. Unlike many experienced bands they give room and creative freedom for the graphic designer so you don’t get that tied up feeling. On the other hand older bands and musicians know better what they want and the feedback is usually more honest. To a designer they can give more challenge which is always good thing.

There are pros and cons in everything, probably also in my choices here. Let me know your thoughts and opinions from these. They are not in particular order, I ordered them alphabetically so there is not number 1 anymore. Enjoy and have a metal year 2014!
